Retinol is the alcohol form of vitamin A and is a precursor to other forms of this vitamin, such as retinoic acid. When absorbed into the skin, retinol is oxidized to retinoic acid. However, retinol is safer for application in cosmetic formulations, as it is less irritating and less sensitizing when compared to retinoic acid.
