Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and ensures structural support of the skin and integrity of hair and nails. The natural production of collagen by the body tends to decrease with age, leading to the formation of wrinkles, creases, skin sagging, and muscle stiffness.

Frankincense essential oil has an inhibitory activity on the collagenase enzyme. Collagenase is responsible for destroying collagen, the main structural protein that gives elasticity and strength. Once the activity of collagenase is reduced, the skin aging process is slowed down. Tests using frankincense extract showed the suppression of the tyrosinase enzyme, responsible for the overproduction of melanin that results in the formation of skin spots, indicating that this extract has an effective skin brightening effect.
